A Collaboration Checklist

Over the decades, I have worked with dozens of nonprofits who have engaged in some form of collaboration, including the merging of nonprofits. Collaboration is on the “wish list” of many funders and regulatory agencies, but collaboration done for no other reason than to please someone else is not likely to generate positive results.

I was recently invited to present at a mini-conference on collaboration in Chautauqua County, NY hosted by The Capacity Lab. The conference was very well attended, signifying to me both an interest in collaborating, and a desire to learn how to proceed effectively through these opportunities.

My presentation was entitled “A Collaboration Checklist: How Do We Start.” In addition to my presentation, I developed a “take-away” of an actual checklist and tips for best practices. I have added it to my website for anyone to review and use.

I would like to highlight a few things that I stressed in my presentation:

  • Even the most “simple” collaboration opportunity requires clarity and detailed policy and procedure for all those impacted.

  • Organizational values supportive of change and collaborative work are something to look for in organizations you are considering collaborating with (and ideally, you have those values as well).

  • All too often there is a lack of alignment across the organization when it comes to mindset about the opportunity. If the Executive Director doesn’t have the support of the Board, it is time to begin there instead of with the collaborative partner.

  • If you are not regularly “at the table,” do not expect to be sought out for collaborative opportunities and expect skepticism if you try to initiate it.

  • Don’t ignore the gap between you and the largest organizations doing similar work. If the gap is growing, that is something you should probably be concerned about.

  • I value organizations that are committed to their staff’s continued employment. I am less impressed when quality suffers because the organization insists on roles remaining the same.
